The history of GEL-KAYANO
Instead of treating 33 shoes as isolated releases, this guide follows the turning points that changed the direction of the line.
1993: the GEL-KAYANO TRAINER
The original arrived in 1993 as a U.S.-focused performance running shoe. It was named after developer Toshikazu Kayano, whose early design story included inspiration from the protective strength of a stag beetle.
2000: GEL-KAYANO 6 as a design reset
At ASICS’ 30th-anniversary event, Kayano described the sixth model as a major turning point, connecting storytelling, advanced technology and scientific analysis of running movement.
2001: GEL-KAYANO VII and IGS
ASICS’ official corporate history highlights the 2001 GEL-KAYANO VII as an IGS model, using movement analysis to coordinate multiple performance functions rather than treating them as isolated parts.
2008: GEL-KAYANO 14
The 14 became one of the series’ key crossover stories: celebrated as a performance runner in its time, then rediscovered as a defining SportStyle silhouette.
2013: the 20th anniversary
GEL-KAYANO 20 launched in November 2013 for the line’s 20th anniversary, with ASICS highlighting FluidRide, FluidFit and associated support systems.
2023: 30th anniversary and 4D GUIDANCE SYSTEM
GEL-KAYANO 30 reframed stability around how a runner’s movement changes with fatigue. The 31 and 32 continued this adaptive-stability direction.
2026: GEL-KAYANO 33 and FLUIDSUPPORT
GEL-KAYANO 33 introduces FLUIDSUPPORT and dual-layer cushioning, marking a new phase after the 4D GUIDANCE SYSTEM-led 30–32 era.
